Duffy League is set for a thrilling finish

-

TWO of the Newcastle Schools’ Under-11 Leagues have reached their mid-winter break.

There is a great tussle going on at the top of the Duffy League.

Hilton lead the way with a 100% record from their four games.

Throckley are closely following them but dropped points in a recent 3-3 draw with Cheviot.

Waverley are in third spot but they have played a game more than their nearest challengers.

Last year’s champions Westerhope are in fourth and have only lost the one game so far against St John Vianney.

Most of the top teams still have to play each other so the finish to the season could be very exciting.

St John Vianney could yet be the surprise package.

They are unbeaten but have games in hand on the other teams as they have had a number of fixtures postponed.

Games re-start on Tuesday, February 27.

The Westgate League looks a lot clearer at the top.

English Martyrs are sitting proudly at the summit at the midway stage of the campaign.

They have won all of their games although they just squeezed past St Cuthbert’s Kenton 1-0.

St Michael’s are currently in second place having only lost to English Martyrs and drawn with Stocksfield Avenue.

St Cuthbert’s Kenton are a close third and Stocksfield are fourth, having drawn all their games so far.

The next round of games are due to commence in February.

The other two leagues, the Simpson and Dale Leagues, start after the Christmas holiday.

County seven-a-side champions Gsoforth Juniors will probably go into the Simpson League as favourites.

They will be hard pushed by Gosforth Central, Gosforth East and Newcastle School for Boys.

Last season’s Champions Walkergate will start as favourites in the Dale League but St Vincent’s could push them close.

This league restarts on Wednesday, January 10.

All the champions from each league will meet in the King Cup Finals on Friday, March 23, at Newcastle’s Walker School.
