NEW pictures of police swooping on four popular Newcastle city centre bars and closing them down as part of an investigation into drugs in the city have been released.

The images show police placing closure orders on the doors of House of Smith, Madame Koo and Florita’s, on Collingwood Street as well as The Empress bar, on Side before Christmas.

Officers have so far arrested 21 people as part of an investigation into the alleged supply of Class A drugs in Newcastle.

All those arrested, including former Geordie Shore star Marty McKenna, have been released under police investigation.

Last week, a judge at a hearing at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court ordered The Empress to remain closed for two weeks while the other three venues, all owned by the Apartment Group, were ordered to remain closed until 4pm on January 3 at a separate hearing on Thursday.

A review of the Empress’ premises licence is due to take place at a Newcastle City Council licensing sub-committee meeting on January 8.

Donna Cope, head of operations at the Apartment Group, said: “We are all extremely shocked and disappointed with the previous course of events, however following court today we are delighted that it will be business as usual across all our Collingwood Street bars as of January 4.

“More than 16,000 people a week enjoy the award-winning House of Smith, Madame Koo, and Florita’s and we have had virtually no trouble for more than 10 years - and I’d like to thank all our brilliant staff and customers for making that possible.

“However, when venues are this popular and busy, unfortunately, this can attract a few individuals who will spoil it for everyone else.”

Chief Superintendent David Felton, of Northumbria Police, said: “We are pleased with the outcome for all the premises and believe this will serve as a strong warning to everyone involved in the night time economy in Newcastle. These closures show that Northumbria Police will use all methods available to ensure we maintain a safe and enjoyable night time economy in the city.

“Our investigation into those involved in the criminal activity on the premises on question is ongoing and a number of people remain under investigation.”
