JANUARY 1, 2018 will be a date to remember for these families, who welcomed new babies into the world on New Year’s Day.

First to be born at Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital, in Cramlington, was Enzo Simpson, born at 3.36am, weighing 6lbs 12oz.

Mum Anna Simpson, 29, and dad Liam, 30, from Berwick said they “had a feeling” Enzo was going to be late – and they were delighted with his special birthday. Anna said: “We’re so happy. “It’s amazing to have him, and it’s nice to be on New Year – I think if he’d come on Christmas his birthday might be overshadowed, but New Year will be great, he’s going to have some good birthdays when he’s older.”

The couple, a dog groomer and a builder’s merchant, were looking forward to introducing baby Enzo to his older sister Harriet.

Anna added: “Harriet doesn’t know he’s been born yet, but she’s super excited about him – she was asking us yesterday if he was going to come today, so she’ll be really happy.”

Beatrice Eve Dixon “wanted to make an entrance”, according to beaming mum Alison, 34.

Beatrice was due on December 30 but “held on” until 10.43am on New Year’s Day, when she arrived weighing 7lb 7oz.

“We’re starting the new year right, with her,” Alison said.

Alison and partner Shaun, 34, from Blyth, are now looking forward to celebrating both Beatrice’s birth, and a belated Christmas, as the holidays have passed quietly as they prepared for the birth.

Devon Higgins, 33, and Mick Davison, 49, from North Shields, were delighted to meet Marcus Davison, born at 2.23pm weighing 8lb 8oz, and with a thick head of ginger hair already.

Marcus was due on December 21, so Devon was “very relieved” to see him on New Year’s Day.

“It’s definitely a good way to start the new year,” she said.

Mick added: “He’s lovely – his eyes were open almost as soon as he was born.”

Harley Clark joined mum Toni, a retail worker, 30 and dad Perry, 31, a little early, at 4.20am on New Year’s Day, despite not being due until January 11.

After a “very tough” labour, the little lad was sleeping soundly.

Electrician Perry said: “It doesn’t feel real yet, it’s exciting and scary at the same time.”
