Four arrested as man fights for life

INJURIES TO HEAD FOR VICTIM OF ALLEGED ASSAULT

A MAN is fighting for his life after an alleged targeted attack in Chester-leStreet.

The man is in a critical condition at the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) after being found by paramedics with “serious head injuries” outside a house on Victor Street early on Saturday morning.

Police have arrested four people on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent after a “disturbanc­e”, with forensics officers searching for evidence at the scene.

Yesterday, officers were still questionin­g the suspects – two men, both 30, and two women aged 35 and 36 – in police custody.

Teams of police remained at the scene yesterday while investigat­ions continued.

A Durham Constabula­ry spokeswoma­n said: “A man is in a critical condition in hospital following a disturbanc­e in the Victor Street area of Chester-le-Street yesterday morning.

“Police believe this was a targeted incident and that all parties are known to each other.

“A police presence will remain in the Victor Street area of the town as enquiries continue.”

Paramedics took the seriouslyi­njured man to the RVI in Newcastle, according to a North East Ambulance Service spokeswoma­n, who added: “We were called at 5.29am to the Victor Street area of Chester-le-Street.

“Police were on scene and we sent one ambulance.

“We have taken one male patient, who was on the street outside a property with serious head injuries, to the RVI.”
