THE GROWN UPS LIVING WITH MUM AND DAD

MORE THAN A FIFTH OF 24-30 YEAR OLDS ARE STILL LIVING WITH THEIR PARENTS

- By ALICE CACHIA

NEARLY a quarter of the 12.6 million people aged between 20 and 34 in the UK still live with their parents.

Official figures reveal the number of young adults yet to move out of the family home has risen by more than 500,000 in just 20 years. While the number of 20 to 34 year olds living with mum and dad stood at 2.48 million two decades ago, it has now reached 2.98 million. The data, from the Office for National Statistics, shows young men are much more likely than young women to still live at home. Some 29 per cent of males aged 20-34 still do so, compared to 18 per cent of females.

While the figures have increased across the age range, it is people in their early and late twenties who are far more likely to still be at home than they were in 1997.

One obvious reason for that is that it is now much harder for young people to raise the money to buy their own house or flat.

Another reason may be that people are waiting until they’re older to settle down and have children.

The figures do not include those who do have children and still live at their family home, or those who live with their partners at their family home.

In 1997, 36 per cent of men aged 25 still lived with their parents.

That has now risen to 41 per cent.

Among women, the number of 25 year olds living at home has risen from 19 per cent in 1997 to 25 per cent in 2017.

While the number of young adults living with their parents has risen, the number of 16 year olds living with their parents actually gone down. In 1997, 95 per cent of 16 year olds did so, but by 2017 that had fallen to 93 per cent. The number of 17 year olds living with their parents has also decreased. In 1997, 94 per cent of 17 year olds lived with mum and dad. That fell to 93 per cent in the 20 years since.
