12 MONTHS OF TRUMP

Donald Trump has completed his first year in the White House. MARION McMULLEN looks at the US president’s impact on the world

-

1 DONALD Trump has called the White House home for the past year, but he has yet to host a state visit since he was elected America’s president. Trump’s predecessor Barack Obama welcomed one foreign leader on a state visit during his first year – Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of India in November 2009.

2 HE loves Twitter, but Trump has only tweeted twice as @POTUS preferring to use his @realDonaldTrump account instead. He famously left people puzzled when he tweeted the word “covfefe” last May. President Obama tweeted as @POTUS 139 times during his final year as president.

3 PRIME Minister Theresa May was the first foreign leader to meet the president for talks just a week after his inauguration. She said he had accepted an invitation from the Queen to make a state visit to Britain. The invitation came seven days after his inauguration.

4 THE billionaire businessman has visited 14 different countries as president. They include China, Japan, South Korea, Germany and France, but not Britain. He had been due to open London’s new US embassy but refused.

5 THE number of bills signed into law so far by President Trump is 113 and the number of executive orders he has signed is 58 – the highest for any single presidential year so far this century. President Obama, right, signed 41 orders in his first year, while George W Bush signed 56.

6 TRUMP made his first visit overseas 120 days after becoming president. He travelled to Riyadh in Saudi Arabia on May 20 last year and met King Salman bin Abdul Al-Saud. Obama’s first foreign trip came just 30 days into his presidency when he travelled to Ottawa in Canada to meet Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

7 DONALD Trump’s current approval rating stands at 37% according to American pollster Gallup. It is the lowest rating for any US president since the end of the Second World War. Bill Clinton had an approval rating of 54% and George W Bush enjoyed a high rating of 83%.

8 WRITING about the inner workings of Trump’s administration, Fire And Fury author Michael Wolff said: “I don’t know if the president is clinically off his rocker.

“I do know, from what I saw and what I heard from people around him, that Donald Trump is deeply unpredictable, irrational, at times bordering on incoherent.”

9 PRINCE Harry answered: “I don’t know about that” when he was asked if Barack Obama will be invited to his wedding to Meghan Markle on May 19 at Windsor Castle after a report claimed Government sources suggested asking the American statesman would infuriate Trump.

10 WORDS such as Trumponomics, Trumpertantrum (an angry early morning tweet) and Trumpkin (a pumpkin carved to resemble the politician) could be fast-tracked into the Oxford English Dictionary.
