Oviedo will stay with Cats for now

- By CRAIG JOHNS

BRYAN Oviedo has pledged his short-term future to Sunderland, declaring himself happy to stay and fight to stop the club being relegated to League One.

In an otherwise bleak campaign, Oviedo has been one of the Black Cats’ most consistent performers.

News of his commitment to the cause will be welcomed by manager Chris Coleman, who has made clear he will not stand in the way of any player not willing to show the fight needed.

Oviedo has solidified his place in the side at left full-back, so much so Coleman even considered sending Brendan Galloway back to Everton after a disappointing loan spell.

Oviedo said of his future: “I have spoken with my representative and I know how difficult it is to leave in January.

“I want to stay in Sunderland to get out of the situation we are in.

“I am very happy in this team and I can continue here without a problem.”

Oviedo helped Sunderland pick up their first victory of 2018 on Saturday against Hull City - a win which moved them off the foot of the Championship table, although not out of the relegation zone just yet.

However, the former Everton defender insists dropping to League One is not an option for either him nor the club.

He added: “We have played well but we have lacked consistency.

“I think we have a very good team, with good players.

“I do not plan to go down, playing in the third division would be very difficult for me.

“Sunderland are a big team from England.

“I have many years of not being in Championship and it is not an option to go to League One.

“We have to see how we correct the situation we are in.”

As well as securing safety on Wearside, Oviedo also has one eye on this summer’s World Cup in Russia where, fitness permitting, he is sure to be part of Costa Rica’s side.

While Oviedo has committed his short-term future to the Wearsiders, he has admitted a strong performance at the World Cup could open up new avenues for him.

He said: “I have a contract here but I also know if I go to the World Cup then a good display there can help improve opportunities. “
