NON-LEAGUE Highwaymen secure points to extend lead

- By MARK CARRUTHERS

MORPETH Town extended their lead at the top of Northern League Division One with a hard-fought 3-1 win over Stockton Town.

The Highwaymen were given a severe test by an ever-improving Stockton side – however, goals from Sean Taylor, Mark Davison and secured all three points for the home side.

There were 24 minutes on the clock when Taylor cut in from the left-hand side and curled a sublime effort just inside Liam Jordan’s far-post.

Davison got the second from close-range after half-time to put the hosts in complete control.

Curtis Coppen added a third as Morpeth moved 18 points clear of second-placed Marske United, although the Seasiders have six games in hand.

Elsewhere in Division One, Sunderland RCA came from a goal down to secure a win at Penrith.

Martyn Coleman put the hosts a goal up but two goals in a minute from Luke Page and Nathan O’Neill gave RCA all three points.

There was late drama at Heritage Park as Bishop Auckland moved into the last eight of the Northern League Cup with a win over Guisborough Town.

Steven Roberts put Guisborough ahead on 27 minutes – but they were pegged back by Michael Hoganson’s equaliser on the hourmark.

Louis Goldsack put Guisborough back in front on 71 minutes but the tie looked to be heading to a penalty shoot-out thanks to a late own goal.

However, Andrew Johnson completed a remarkable turnaround and put Bishops into the quarter-finals with a goal in the sixth minute of injury-time.
