Heed looking to strengthen
GATESHEAD manager Steve Watson has lined up two loan signings from Championship clubs ahead of the weekend, writes JEFF BOWRON.
Heed host Maidstone United on Saturday followed by Wrexham on Tuesday - and Watson is keen to bolster his squad.
Midfield man Ben Fox came in on loan from Burton Albion last week along with teenage Newcastle United striker Lewis McNall.
Fox marked his home debut with a stunning equaliser in Tuesday’s draw against Woking as Gateshead again failed to win on home soil.
McNall came off the bench for his first run out and Watson wants to bring in two more players on loan for the rest of the season.
Watson said: “We need to bring a natural wide player and also a rightback, and I’m hopeful of getting both.
“It may be we need to get some players out on loan to accommodate the deals, but getting them will strengthen and balance the squad.”
Gateshead have already lost the energy and goal threat of midfield man Luke Hannant this month following his four-figure move to Port Vale.
Watson hopes he does not lose any more of his squad as he looks for consistency and a strong final three months of the season.
“The two players lined up are strong possibilities, but you never know until the deals go through,” he said.
“Losing Hannant was a disappointment but, as other clubs in our league have found, it’s difficult when Football League clubs come in and pay fees.
“At this stage there have been no inquiries for any other players, and I want to strengthen the squad not weaken it.”
