Police search for drivers who fled crash site

- By CHRIS KNIGHT

A SEARCH is on for two drivers following an early morning mystery pile-up on Tyneside.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the two-car crash on Old Durham Road, close to the junction with Evistones Road, in Gateshead, shortly after 6am on Wednesday.

A grey Audi A6 and a green Ford Focus were involved in the collision.

But nobody was present and no injuries have been reported.

Now Northumbria Police has confirmed inquiries are ongoing to trace the drivers.

A nearby resident, who did not wish to be named, had just left their home and was walking along Old Durham Road at about 6.10am when they saw the crash scene.

They said: “I found the cars lying in the middle of the road, they were blocking both lanes.

“The Audi has clearly hit it with a hell of a whack, you can see the damage on both cars.

“The airbags had gone off in the front and back of the Audi.

“I checked and could not see anyone in the cars, but the radio was still playing in the Audi.

“One of the neighbours said they heard a bang and came out and saw a man running off down the street.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting log 123 24/01/18, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
