Callum’s MP date to tackle the trolls
CAMPAIGN IN PARLIAMENT
Reporter AN anti-bullying campaigner is teaming up with Katie Price in a crusade against online trolls.
Callum Carr, 19, has previously won plaudits for raising awareness about school bullying and is now turning his attention to abusive behaviour on the internet.
The South Tyneside teen will attend an evidence session at the House of Parliament tomorrow to support the media personality and model’s push to tighten up laws around online bullying.
Price launched a petition last year after a spate of abuse aimed at her son, Harvey, who has physically disabilities and learning difficulties.
She is calling for a register to be created to make online abuse a specific crime and to create a register which must be signed by those convicted of the offence.
The petition has been signed more than 220,000 times and is part of a growing awareness around misconduct and intimidation on social media.
Callum said: “I will attend the evidence session on Tuesday in Parliament in a bid to see the right outcome for millions of people trolled every year online.
“The abuse that Katie’s son, Harvey, has encountered is utterly disgusting and those responsible need to be held accountable; without making online abuse a criminal offence, those who seek to troll and abuse people online will not be reprimanded fully. “I fully support Katie’s campaign and admire the work she is doing of highlighting this issue and using her public platform to help make a difference. “I will continue to support her campaign and would encourage local MPs to do the same if a debate reaches Parliament, I also look forward to working closely with Katie and her team on many anti-bullying campaigns and work very soon.” In 2015, Callum was presented with an award named in honour of Princess Diana at St James’ Park for his role as a champion of anti-bullying causes.
