Even stranger things...

-

THINGS are getting strange, we’re starting to worry. This could be a case for Mulder and Scully. Yes, Catatonia singer Cerys Matthews had it right.

Last time we saw the FBI agents, Mulder (David Duchovny) was dying from a deadly virus, while Scully (Gillian Anderson) was staring at a UFO coming down from the sky. All of this a totally standard day in the office for these two.

As this 11th series begins – the final one with Anderson – we get a brief flashback to remind us of the horrors that await. Namely a global contagion, threatening to exterminate mankind, all set to clips from American history, finishing with President Trump swearing allegiance. Did we mention global contagion?

Anyway, The X-Files knows how to ramp up the action straight from the off – Scully is lying unconscious on her office floor and rushed to hospital.

A brain scan shows a frenzy of activity which seems to be pulsing Morse code, flashing the words “find him”.

“This is insanity!” exclaims Mulder. This from a man who wrestles with aliens as often as he has hot dinners.

Then Scully is awake, and she’s seen things – scary things – in a premontiton of the end of the world. Meanwhile, they find out that they aren’t the only ones desperately searching for their long-lost son. The plots are always ridiculous and this opener is not the best episode in the X-Files case-load. However, it’s enough to turn you into a believer once more.
