Making a splash

Time to perfect puddle jumping

-

PARENTS normally spend half their lives telling their children to stay out of puddles, but not this February half term. Instead, children of all ages are being encouraged to grab their wellies, get outside and join in puddle jumping championships being held across the UK at WWT’s wetland centres.

New children’s character Dusty Duck will be joining in the fun and helping kids create the biggest, craziest splash possible.

At each wetland centre, children will compete against each other to see who can produce the biggest splash from their puddle jump – as measured by special splash-o-meters. They will also be judged on their enthusiasm and jumping style.

Daily winners will be announced throughout the half term. Some lucky ‘super-splashers’ will receive a fantastic prize, but every contestant will receive a ‘splashtastic’ sticker to acknowledge their puddle jumping skills.

As well as the main puddle-jumping competition arenas, selected centres will have practice zones to help entrants perfect their technique.

Hannah Clifford from WWT said: “We know children love to splash about in puddles, so we thought we’d give them the chance to channel their inner splasher through our puddle jumping competition.

“It’s all a lot of fun and we know that children who love puddles often grow up to be adults who love the outdoors so, through these championships, we’re nurturing a love that may help protect wetlands and the wildlife that depend on them for years to come.”
