Hall over for Brandon as Sexton wins

NORTH Shields’ Craig Sexton beat Gateshead’s Brandon Hall 3-1 to win the latest one-day handicappe­d pro-am event at Whitley Bay Snooker Centre.

With 21 points a frame start, Sexton got off to a flyer by stealing the opening two frames 81-65, 73-62 - both on the colours.

Hall bounced back with an 83-55 victory in the third to reduce the deficit to 2-1 - only to see Sexton finish off the job by winning the high-scoring fourth 97(36-24)-49 - and the match.

The two beaten semi-finaists were Elliot Slessor, who lost 3-2 after conceding 49 points a frame to Sexton, and Carl Sexton, who went down 3-1 after receiving 56 points a frame off Hall.

The highest break award went to Hall with a run of 81.

Blyth’s Ash Wilson claimed the plate title after defeating Chris Kelso 2-1. ■■IN the best-of-11 frame China Open qualifiers at Barnsley’s Metrodome Centre, three of the region’s four challenger­s gained a place in the last-64 play-offs.

Gary Wilson ended his 6-2 hammering of China’s latest recruit Niu Zhuang with a terrific 128 break.

Wales’ Jamie Jones had breaks of 76-53- 58 but it was Sam Craigie’s runs of 67, 62, 56, 98 and 66 which took him through to the final stages a 6-3 winner.

Elliot Slessor’s impressive 6-4 victory over Wales’ Daniel Wells included runs of 87, 53, 58 and 105 in both the eighth and tenth frames.

Unable to make a break over 50, an off-form John Astley crashed out 6-2 against China’s Yan Bingtao. ■■GARY Wilson was also in action in the last-32 play-offs of the D88 German Masters Championsh­ip at the Tempodrom Centre in Berlin.

After cruising past 2016 winner Martin Gould 5-2 with several runs in the 40s and 50s and a top break of 112 to reach the last 16, Wilson then went out 5-3 to London’s Jimmy Robertson.
