TWO more men have appeared in court accused of firearms offences relating to an alleged New Year’s Day shooting at a house in a Newcastle suburb.

Said Djama and Mohammed Nassir were facing four and five charges respectively after a handgun was suspected to have been shot through a letterbox at a home in Brunswick Village.

The pair appeared in custody at South East Northumberland Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

Mohammed, 35, of Buckingham Drive, Sheffield, and Djama, 29, of Greenland Way, Sheffield, faced the following charges:

possessing ammunition without a firearms certificate, jointly with others, namely 9mm bullets.

possessing a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence, a 9mm handgun.

possessing a prohibited weapon, jointly with others, a 9mm handgun designed or adapted so two or more missiles could be discharged without repeated pressure on the trigger, and

damaging property, jointly with others, belonging to the couple who live at the house in Brunswick.

Mohammed also faced a further offence of possessing a firearm when prohibited, a 9mm handgun.

Because of the seriousness of the charges, no pleas were taken during the brief hearing.

The pair instead spoke only to confirm their names, dates of birth, addresses and nationalities.

James Long, prosecuting, said: “I would invite you to send all matters to the crown court.

“I don’t think my friends seek to persuade you otherwise. It’s a linked matter.”

Both men were remanded un custody to next appear at Newcastle Crown Court on March 8.

As previously reported, a third defendant, Jamal Barrat, 45, of Borough Road, North Shields, has already pleaded not guilty to the same offences faced by Mohammed at a hearing earlier this week at Newcastle Crown Court.

He will face trial at a location and date yet to be fixed.

Northumbria Police officers were initially called to Grey Street, Brunswick Village, shortly after midnight on January 1 after reports that the front door had been damage.

They later alleged a firearm had been discharged through the letterbox. Nobody was injured during the incident.
