Dummett can deliver for Wales: Boss

-

RAFA Benitez believe Paul Dummett has enough quality to return to the international football scene with Ryan Giggs pondering whether to recall him to the Wales set-up.

Dummett has just two caps for Wales but stepped back from playing for the Dragons in May after continually being under-used by former manager Chris Coleman.

The Welsh FA are aware Dummett is still eligible to play for England after not featuring in a competitive game for the country he represented from youth level upwards.

The Toon left-back’s decision to step away from Wales was backed by Benitez last year but the United manager now believes the Newcastle-born defender could easily play on the bigger stage.

Giggs will soon name his squad for a game in China next month for the China Cup - with a clash with Uruguay or the Czech Republic lying in wait for the winners.

When asked if Dummett - who has been in good form for the Magpies - was still up to the job at international level, Benitez replied: “Yeah. If we analyse his characteristics the main one is his left foot.

“There are not too many left fullbacks in the market and especially this country.

“Every country has their own problem.

“Paul is somebody who has experience in the Premier League and can do well.

“He can play in a position in which it is difficult to find players so it will be an option for them.

“We will see what he wants to do in the future.”

Dummett’s return to action after a hamstring injury has coincided with Newcastle showing a little more solidity.

Benitez stated he will also look to use Kenedy in his position at times, adding: “Paul is a player who will always give you something you are expecting.

“You cannot say he will make 20 crosses, score two goals or give five assists - but you do know he will be there doing his job.

“When we were looking for an offensive full-back it was our idea to have a different option.

“Paul can attack too but he is very steady defensively. He is somebody who will give you something. He is aware of what is going on around him and he is somebody you can trust.

“We have somebody else to come in and do something different, Kenedy will more or less bring that to us.

“Kenedy is a winger who can also play as an offensive full-back.”
