YOUNG Newcastle goalkeeper Freddie Woodman is targeting trophies in his loan spell with Aberdeen.

The 20-year-old joined the Dons on a loan deal until the end of the season on transfer deadline day and made his debut last Saturday, in their 3-0 win over Hamilton.

Derek McInnes’ side still retain slim hopes of beating Celtic to the Scottish Premiership title, while they are still in the Scottish Cup.

Aberdeen were beaten by the Hoops in last year’s final and will move through to the quarter-finals this term - should they beat Dundee United on Sunday and Woodman is targeting his first honours at club level during his short stay in the north of Scotland.

The young shotstopper said: “It is great Aberdeen are still in the cup and what this club did last season in the cup shows the ambition here.

“This club wants to win trophies and it is great to be involved in that.

“If I do get to play in the Scottish Cup I willl be doing everything to help the club get the result it needs to progress.” Former Kilmarnock loanee Woodman kept goal as England’s under-20s were crowned World Champions in South Korea last summer. He admits tasting success at youth level has given him the urge to win more trophies. Woodman added: “Winning that trophy gave me a massive buzz and the realisation there is more to football than money and playing games.

“It is about winning things and the feeling you have from winning a trophy is hard to describe. I want more trophies.”

Woodman continued: “It will be difficult to match being a World Cup winner but ask players how they win back-to-back league titles or Champions Leagues and they will tell you it is the feeling of getting your hands on the trophy that drives you.

“You want it again and again and it becomes an obsession.

“It was an unbelievable experience last summer. We had a fantastic team. We went out there, did the business so professionally and it was a great learning experience - but I don’t think I would have gone out to South Korea and performed like I did if I had not gained that experience of playing in the Scottish Premiership.”
