P FOR POLISH – A SHINY NEW ANDROID

ONLY last year we were celebrating a new version of Google’s Android software. And even though we haven’t all fully digested our Oreo-flavoured Android, right, there’s an even newer version on the horizon.

Android P (they’ll give it a comical name in due course) should be revealed some time next month if all goes according to form.

But already there are rumours and speculation about what may or may not be included.

There is some suggestion that, given Apple is supposedly focusing on stability and speed in this year’s iOS update, Google might take advantage by giving Android a snazzy new look.

And there will no doubt also be a deeper integration of the Google Assistant.

Given that Oreo is only installed on just over 1% of Android devices across the globe as we speak (the latest iOS version is on 65% of compatible devices), you’d be forgiven for thinking that what Google does next with its Android OS ought to be obvious: Make it easier to upgrade.

SNAP MAP’S NOW ON THE WEB

YOU may recall a minor brouhaha last year about the Snap Map – a map built into Snapchat that allowed you to see where your friends were (provided they had opted in).

The fuss didn’t last long, and now Snap has brought the feature to the web.

You can visit Snap’s website right now to peruse the map, which shows you hot-spots of Snapchat story activity, and allows you to see those stories (provided they’re public and without revealing the poster’s user name).

It’s a mildly amusing diversion, but comes into its own when events are taking place – the map allows you to drop in and see what’s happening.
