Watson delighted with another away-day victory, as York goal secures win over hosts Guiseley

- By JEFF BOWRON

AN early goal from in-form wide man Wes York last night proved enough to inflict a sixth straight defeat on rock-bottom Guiseley.

The Lions have stayed up on the last day in each of their two seasons in the Vanarama National League.

Their luck could run out this season, however, with the Yorkshire outfit five points adrift at the foot of the table and 10 points from safety.

No such problems for Steve Watson’s Gateshead, who are now 13th after their impressive run of results away from Tyneside continued.

They could have won the game at Nethermoor more emphatically than 1-0 and they restricted the toothless Lions to very few chances.

Heed manager Watson was confident his side would bounce back from Saturday’s home defeat against AFC Fylde – and he was right.

Watson said: “I was pleased with all aspects of the game tonight. We worked their keeper quite a lot and he got man of the match.

“We got the early goal and then nearly scored another through Jordan Burrow, which was arguably over the line.

“Vassell scored with a header, but it was ruled out for offside – everyone stood up and were magnificent tonight.”

Watson gave special praise to match-winner York, who has excelled in a new wing-back role since getting back into the side.

“I haven’t got him in that role to be a full-back,” Watson added. “I’ve got him there to break up the wing and

attack the full-back. He’s got room in front of him and space behind and he does it with such ease at times you wonder why he tries to do anything else.

“It was a perfect Wes York goal on top of a very good team performance.”

York pounced for the all-important goal with just over five minutes on the clock on a cold night at Nethermoor.

The former Wrexham man ran on to Scott Barrow’s long ball to leave Adam Crookes for dead.

His 15-yard strike saw the Lions’ on-loan Northampton Town goalkeeper Luke Coddington picking the ball out of the net.

It was a third consecutive victory over Guiseley this season by a single goal margin, with sixth-placed Boreham Wood next up for the Tynesiders.
