York: Familiar rival will offer tough test

- By JEFF BOWRON

WINGER Wes York is targeting more goals and has challenged Gateshead to maintain their upward trajectory.

The 24-year-old’s early strike on Tuesday – his fourth of the season – saw the Heed bounce back from Saturday’s defeat against AFC Fylde at the first opportunity.

Beating bottom club Guiseley 1-0 took FA Trophy quarter-finalists Gateshead up to 13th.

It came through a typical York goal as the former Wrexham man capitalised on Scott Barrow’s eighth assist of the season.

The result made it three wins and a draw from their last four away games for the Tynesiders, Guiseley sacking manager Paul Cox the following day.

Now, York has Borehamwood in his sights and Meadow Park a ground that holds fond memories for the Leicester-born player.

York said: “I scored the first goal when we won 4-0 there last season and it was one of my better ones.

“It was our last away game of the season and we scored good goals but we will take any sort of victory on Saturday.”

It is the fourth meeting between the two sides this season, with Gateshead unbeaten in the previous three - but York expects it to be the toughest.

He added: “We managed to get past Boreham Wood after a replay in the FA Trophy and drew with them at our place in the league.

“They have moved into the top six and will be looking for revenge but our away form is strong and we go there in confident mood.

“We have had to up our game every time we have played them and we will have to do so again as they are a good side.” Under previous manager Neil Aspin, York was only a bit player in the opening three months of the campaign, something he still cannot understand. He said: “I had a good first season so could not understand why I was being left put of the side. “I am playing regularly now and that is what I want.” York is the third leading scorer on Gateshead’s books behind forwards Danny Johnson and Jordan Burrow and is employed as a wing-back. He added: “I am getting further back every season! I started as a striker and then became a winger, midfielder and now a wing-back. “You are more involved as a wingback but it is hard work. The system is working well for us and hopefully the results will continue to come.”
