He doesn’t want anybody to break into his home, so he says he would never do it to someone else Mark Humble, for Andrews

A burglar who forced his way into a woman’s home “using an axe” was quickly snared when he left blood behind on a bed.

Carl Andrews broke into the house in Benwell, in Newcastle’s West End, while he occupant was out and searched the property for items to steal.

The 42-year-old eventually helped himself to £300 cash from a kitchen draw and jewellery from a bedroom before fleeing the scene, a court heard.

But when the shocked householder returned and phoned the police, Andrews was easily identified as the culprit after he left his DNA behind in blood that was found on a bed quilt.

He was arrested and appeared at North Tyneside Magistrates’ Court to plead guilty to one count of burglary. Prosecutor James Palmer said the female occupant left her home on Westfield Road at 9.30am on November 29 and returned half an hour later. “She enters the house and sees a rear door that leads into the kitchen had been forced open,” he added. “The damage was so severe, she thought an axe had been used to force the door. “The kitchen draws were open and £300 cash had been taken. She goes upstairs and sees her jewellery box in her bedroom had been moved and a Pandora bracelet and other items of costume jewellery had been taken.”

The police were called and crime officers examined the property, where they found blood on the back door and on a quilt on the bed.

Andrews was identified from his DNA and arrested but claimed he had no memory of the burglary as he had been high on valium.

Magistrates were told the cash, a Pandora bracelet worth £400 and other items of jewellery were never recovered.

Mark Humble, mitigating, said, although Andrews, of Rookwood Road, Denton Burn, had past convictions, this was his first for burglary.

He added: “He had fallen into the wrong company for a short period of time and he was given various tablets on this occasion as he has no memory whatsoever of this.

“He’s not a burglar and his record reflects that. He doesn’t want anybody to break into his home, so he says he would never do it to someone else.”

Magistrates adjourned the case for the preparation of a pre-sentence report and bailed Andrews to next appear at the same court on February 28.
