PUPILS ARE TOP OF THE FORM WHEN IT COMES TO SHOWING OFF THEIR SPORTNG PROWESS

-

PUPILS were put through their sporting paces at two School Games events organised by Tyne and Wear Sport.

At Temple Park Leisure Centre in South Shields, students competed against each other in a Parallel Challenge and sportshall athletics competition.

During the morning, the Parallel Challenge provided a sporting test for pupils with disabilities - including events such as the bean bag throw, the soft javelin throw and obstacle relay races.

Fifteen schools from across Tyne and Wear took part and the overall winners were New York Primary School and Marine Park First School.

The afternoon event was the sportshall athletics competition for year nine and year 10 students representing 12 schools from across Tyne and Wear.

Overall, it was the Gateshead schools which dominated, the winner of the girls’ competition being Whickham School while Cardinal Hulme took the boys’ honours.

Students from Tyne Metropolitan College were also recruited to support the event with coaching, judging and scoring.

Meanwhile, eight talented young players battled their way into the North East finals of the Schools Games Badminton Tournament at the Tyneside Badminton Centre in Sandyford, Newcastle. Ten teams battled it out for a place in the Games’ regional event in Stockton in March.

The squads who made it through were the girls’ team from Gateshead’s Emmanuel College and the boys’ squad from Newcastle’s Gosforth Academy.

Claire Lee, School Sport Development Manager at Tyne and Wear Sport said: “The School Games has given children across the region the opportunity to embrace sport.

“Results from the individual athletics events were at an all-time high, with particularly fast times in the sprint races at Temple Park.

“Some of the students are members of local athletics clubs and their talent was apparent throughout many of the activities.

“We are committed to having more people more active more often and want young people to become involved in sport as well as developing a sporting habit for life.

“The standard of competition in the badminton event was incredibly high and there was a great show of sportsmanship throughout.

“During one of the boys’ matches there was never more than one point separating the players during the whole game.”
