United star is on the crest of wave

- PAUL DUMMETT

PAUL Dummett feels like he is on the crest of a wave right now - after signing a new deal at Newcastle United AND beating Manchester United at St James’ Park in the same week.

The former season ticket holder’s new contract could see him stay at United until 2022 and the Academy product has made huge strides at the club considering he was just days away from being released under Alan Pardew in 2012.

However, Dummett has worked hard to retain his place at Newcastle and his appearance against the Red Devils proved to be his 131st outing in a Toon shirt.

Knowing his contract was close to being agreed, Dummett spoke about his emotions at the final whistle after the win against Man United.

He said: “When the final whistle went I just lay back and soaked that moment up.

“Lying there with a Newcastle shirt on having beaten Manchester United in front of a sell-out crowd was such a big thing and a moment you want to make the most of.

“There was also a relief. There are nine or 10 other teams who are looking to stay up. Playing against Man United summed it up for me.

“At Newcastle, with that crowd behind you, it is possible to beat teams like that.

“The buzz at the end when all the fans celebrated that final whistle together, it is massive.

“The fans stayed behind to celebrate that win at the end. The feeling you get is hard to describe.”

Newcastle now have an 11-game run-in and will look to make sure they retain their top-flight place. Dummett added: “We know every game is so important when I sank to the floor, I was relieved and delighted to get three points. “This (Man United) is one of the games the pundits and fans may look at and maybe even write it off beforehand. As a player, you know you have a chance if every player gives their all. “Anything can happen and this game showed that. “It was a much-needed win and a confidence-booster going into the Bournemouth game.” About his new deal, Dummett said: “It took a while to be done and we discussed it for a bit but I think the club, the manager and me all got what we wanted, which was to extend my stay at the club. “This is the club I have supported for many years so you want to stay. “They said they wanted me to stay too, so it was a no-brainer to sign and I am happy it is all done. “I can now concentrate on just trying to get the team higher up the Premier League now.” Dummett (below) proved to be the only survivor of the club’s FA Youth Cup side of 2010 and he admits it is vital to have local players on board. He added: “We do have a good group of players at the club who understand the meaning of it. “Yet there is nothing better than having a local player who understands it more than anybody from being a fan as well. “It is massive especially coming from Newcastle, which is a unique club. There is only one team in this city and the stadium is right in the middle of it. “The club has had great support for many years and it has a great history here, which I know all about. “For me, I am honoured to play for this club.”
