Shelvey’s still learning, says Magpies boss

-

RAFA Benitez believes that Jonjo Shelvey is still “learning” to become a better player for Newcastle United.

Shelvey – who has been sent off twice this season for the Magpies – put in a fantastic performance against Manchester United to show the Newcastle faithful exactly what he can do when he is in top form.

The England international was many people’s pick for man of the match against the Red Devils during the 1-0 win at St James’ Park.

When asked about Shelvey’s form going into the Bournemouth game, Benitez said: “For me he is somebody who is learning.

“But it is a question of whether he can manage situations and can he do well with all the pressure, the Premier League and people watching him and analysing all of his behaviour.

“He is doing well and hopefully he can carry on playing well which is what he likes to do.”

Shelvey has 11 games left to try to force the issue and convince Gareth Southgate that he could be worthy of a place in his World Cup squad.

But Benitez wants him to focus on doing well for his club first.

He said: “When the team is playing well and he’s playing well, the team does even better. It is positive for both.

“I have seen a player who is training really well. He likes his football here.

“I think when he’s doing well, he enjoys it here even more and then he puts in more effort.

“I am really pleased for him and hopefully it will be really positive for us in the next few games.”
