Magpies’ potential beginning to show – Dublin

-

DION Dublin believes Newcastle United’s true potential is now beginning to show after an impressive performance against Bournemouth.

The Magpies raced to a two-goal lead in Saturday’s game at the Vitality Stadium as Dwight Gayle netted a brace, and the performances of certain players did not go unnoticed by the ex-Coventry and Aston Villa star.

The former striker, who netted 111 goals in the top flight, praised the “spine” of the Magpies after a good run of only two defeats in 10 league games.

Speaking on the BBC’s Final Score he said: “The goalkeeper is looking good for Newcastle. Jamaal Lascelles and Jonjo Shelvey as well – so the spine is looking good and people like Mo Diame and Matt Ritchie are chipping in. When you are down there, you need that. The Newcastle players are standing up and being counted now.”

United threw away the two-goal lead as Adam Smith and Dan Gosling netted two in the final nine minutes to rob the Magpies of two valuable points in the fight for Premier League survival. Having beaten Manchester United a fortnight ago, Dublin believed that getting two wins on the bounce was crucial for United’s fight against the drop.

“If you get two wins back to back, you’ll be OK,” he added. “That’s when players get confidence with their performances – but you have to do it.”
