A collection has been set up to raise money for boxer Scott Westgarth’s family after the Prudhoe man died in hospital.

Light-heavyweight boxer Scott’s death was confirmed on Monday. He was taken to hospital on Saturday night as he fell ill following his win over Dec Spelman in Doncaster.

The GoFundMe page was launched yesterday, which says it is raising money for Scott’s family “to help them in any way shape or form”.

By 2pm yesterday it had raised £1,080.

The 31-year-old former Prudhoe Community High School pupil was raised in Northumberland but had been living, training and working in Sheffield before his tragic death.

Scott’s points victory on Saturday was his seventh win in 10 professional fights.

His opponent, Dec Spelman, tweeted that he was “heartbroken and lost for words” after hearing of his fellow boxer’s death.

Scott took part in a postfight interview before his condition deteriorated, and was treated by paramedics prior to being taken to hospital.

British Boxing Board of Control general secretary Robert Smith told Press Association Sport: “I’ve spoken to the doctors and officials in charge and am satisfied with the procedures. It’s a terrible thing that’s happened. My condolences to all of his family.”
