TWO eye-catching buildings are quickly taking shape at a former shipyard site in North Shields.

Work on the new housing development at Smith’s Dock, known as the Smokehouses, started last year thanks to a partnership between Places for People and Urban Splash.

Once complete, the site will have 80 apartments – 24 in one building, 56 in the other – and will offer spectacular views of the River Tyne.

They have been designed to mirror the architecture of the nearby Brewery Bond development.

Guy Ackernley, residential director of Urban Splash, said there will be a mixture of one, two and three-bedroom apartments which will have floor-to-ceiling windows and balconies as well as on-site parking.

There are to be retail units, possibly cafes or restaurants, on the bottom floors.

The scheme is on schedule to finish early next year.

Nigel Brewer, of Places for People, added: “The main concrete frame has gone up.

“The windows will start to go in soon and we will start fitting out the apartments after that. The work is going well.

“This development will really transform the area.”

The Smokehouses are the second phase of the regeneration of Smith’s Dock, formerly a key part of the region’s nautical heritage.

The first phase includes factory-built townhouses on a site called The Plateau.
