Buses are towed away from city centre street after late-night crash

A BUS crashed near a bar near Newcastle’s Quayside as heavy snow caused chaos on the roads.

Two Go North East buses, the Q3 towards St Peter’s Basin, and one which was out of service, appeared to lose control on Dean Street on Tuesday evening.

The out-of-service bus veered off the road and became wedged in the doorway of Milburn House, next door to the Glass House bar.

Luckily there were no passengers on board and the two drivers were not seriously injured.

The aftermath of the crash, which happened before 11pm, was captured on video by Nikita Jackson.

It has now been shared on Facebook more than 3,000 times.

Police were called to the scene and a bus recovery vehicle was used to tow the vehicles away.

Over in Consett, an unlucky driver crashed into the Lloyds Bank on Victoria Road on Wednesday and was helped out by firefighters.

Although drivers have battled through the snow and ice brought on by the Beast from the East, services have been ending earlier than normal.

Most Go North East buses stopped running between 7pm and 8pm on Wednesday and yesterday.

Kevin Carr, managing director of Go North East, said yesterday: “Due to the continuing bad weather and this evening’s forecasts we will be finishing our services earlier than usual for the safety of our customers and our staff.

“A full list of our last departures is shown on our website but generally last departures from city centres will be between 7pm and 8pm. Unfortunately, we’re unable to reply to individual queries due to the amount we’re receiving.

“We are planning to run as many services as possible, sticking to main roads initially, and would ask passengers to walk to main roads to catch the bus. Keep up to date by visiting gonortheast.co.uk. We’d like to thank everyone for their patience.”
