One Hull of a loss for Mags

FA WOMEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE NORTH DIVISION

-

NEWCASTLE United suffered their heaviest away defeat of the season, losing 4-1 at Hull City.

The 2015 North East Regional League champions took the lead after 11 minutes.

An accurate pass found Katie Thompson, who squared the ball across the box for Rebecca Beech to tap in.

Newcastle goalkeeper Allison Cowling saved a Hope Knight header before the Lady Mags claimed an equaliser after half an hour.

Steph Ord found herself in space and the unmarked midfielder unleashed a powerful long-range shot over the goalkeeper’s head and into the net.

However, minutes later the hosts took a 2-1 half-time lead when Eden Pedersen’s cross was missed by a defender - allowing Beech to slot home for her second goal.

Cowling was kept busy in the second period, denying Thompson and then Knight and Beech with a brilliant double save.

Sophie Stamp then shot wide - but 15 minutes from time she was on target with a bullet shot from the edge of the area.

In the dying minutes the hosts added a fourth, substitute Rachael Ackroyd rounding Cowling and rolling home into an empty net.

With second-placed Liverpool MF and 2016 NERWFL champions Brighouse Town, in third, drawing 0-0, Hull went two points clear with a game in hand.

The Lady Mags stay four points clear of Chester-le-Street Town, in the relegation battle.

A dominant second-half performance by Crewe Alexandra leaves Town still second bottom after they lost 6-2.

Amanda Fallon was on target after ten minutes and 20 minutes later it was 2-0 when Michelle Saunders blasted home the rebound after the goalkeeper had saved her initial header.

Three minutes before the interval, the Durham side was back in it when Nichole Havery converted a penalty.

However, two counters in the first four minutes of the second period by Laura Garner were added to on the hour mark when Fallon netted her second. Abbie Chapman made it 6-1 five minutes later.

Brogan Prudhoe netted a late consolation with a powerful effort for the visitors, who remain three points from safety.
