Alban’s prevail – and deny Teresa a treble

-

THE Newcastle Catholic Primary Schools’ Under-11 Girls’ Five-a-Side Tournament was completed before the wintry weather arrived.

Eight teams took part in the competition, split into two groups.

Group One was dominated by last year’s runners-u p St Alban’s, who won all their games – scoring 14 goals in the process.

The second spot and qualification for the semi-finals was a lot tighter.

St Mark’s and St Lawrence’s drew 1-1 and they both beat St Teresa’s B and lost to St Alban’s – so this meant it went to goal difference.

St Lawrence’s had the best goal difference and progressed to the next round.

In Group Two, champions for the last two years St Teresa’s A dominated – winning all three games with ease.

Our Lady and St Anne’s overcame both St George’s and St Charles to take second spot.

St Charles defeated St George’s to finish third. In the semi-finals, St Teresa’s went 2-0 up against St Lawrence’s.

However, they were pegged back when they conceded their first goal of the tournament.

Things looked tight for a while but St Teresa’s A pulled away with a further two goals to triumph 4-1.

In the other semi, St Alban’s took an early lead and built on this to run out 4-0 victors against Our Lady and St Anne’s.

Our Lady and St Anne’s won the third and fourth-placed play-off 1-0 against St Lawrence’s.

The decider was a repeat of last year – but this time there was a change in the result.

St Teresa’s defence was breached for the first time when St Alban’s took the lead – but St Teresa’s equalised shortly afterwards.

The game was very tight but it was St Alban’s who claimed the allimportant second goal to give them the title for the first time.
