Comeback ace Nelson wants British title

-

BABY Face is on his way back and will top the bill in his native South Shields next month.

Anthony ‘Baby Face’ Nelson, one-time Commonwealth super flyweight champion, has come out of retirement to star at the Temple Park Leisure Centre on Saturday, April 28.

Newcastle promoter Steve Wraith already has seven local fighters lined up to do battle at the event.

Nelson will be joined by stablemates Paul Gidney and Sam Menzies, two fellow Tynesiders in Mark Taylor and debutant Peter Imeson, and the Leather twins Josh and Kalam.

Nelson is adamant he is the “soon-to-be British champion” adding: “I’m in the gym, training hard, and the weight is coming down nicely so I can’t wait to get back out there in April.

“Moving forward, Matchroom with Eddie Hearn provide the kind of shows I want to be on, big shows and title fights.

“I want to be challenging for the British title currently held by Charlie Edwards later in the year so hopefully I can get back into title contention pretty quickly.”

Nelson’s last outing was named as the Fight of the Year but the local favourite finished on the wrong end of the result losing his Commonwealth title to Jamie Conlan in the Copper Box Arena back in April 2016.

Fights like those can either make or break a fighter and for Nelson, although it didn’t break him, he was forced into the background as work and family commitments took over.

“It was one of the best fights of my career but I needed to get back out again straight afterwards,” he said.

“However circumstances didn’t allow me to – I had to go away to work which meant I couldn’t get into the gym but now I’m back at home, in the gym, and working hard.”
