YOUNGSTERS FLOCK TO NEW JUNIOR CLUB’S LAUNCH DAY

-

ALNWICK Bears have arrived with the loudest of roars.

The launch day of the town’s new junior rugby club at Longhoughton’s Westfield Park attracted 71 children, delighting organisers at the Bears’ sister club Cramlington Rockets.

With Bear Cubs for two to sixyear-olds selling out indoors, the under-sevens to under-10s enjoyed their first taste of outdoor rugby league at the launch day.

Since 2016, the Rockets have been coaching in Alnwick schools and holding regular school holiday camps in answer to a growing demand for rugby league in the Northumberland town.

Considered a leader in community engagement, the Rockets were crowned RFL National Community Club of the Year in 2017 and they are committed to using their experience to make the Bears an equal success.

Having put in a lot of work behind the scenes building up to the day, Bears’ chairman Steve Beaty was overwhelmed.

He said: “To see so many children at the launch day was amazing.

“We have been really clear our vision is to make this a unique community club the local people can be proud of and be a part of.

“We have already met a lot of people who want to be a part of that vision and we think we have the foundation here for something very special.

“Our next step is to start teaching the kids rugby league with a view to playing friendlies later this year.”

The Bears will be running free taster sessions for minis rugby and Bear Cubs very Saturday morning at Westfield Park.
