NEWCASTLE United Under-23s booked their place in the last eight of the Premier League Cup with a hard-fought 3-2 win over AFC Bournemouth.

The game was originally scheduled for Benton’s Whitley Park but the fixture was forced into a late switch because of a waterlogged pitch.

United and the Cherries finally went head to head at the club’s training centre but the conditions were difficult on a rain-sodden surface.

Newcastle had two great chances in the opening stages, both of them falling for Owen Gallacher - but he steered them wide.

Mo Sangare’s run and shot also had Bournemouth flapping.

However, the visitors took the lead through Nnamdi Ofoborh on 32 minutes after he tapped home from close range.

The visitors held that lead at the break but Newcastle equalised on 50 minutes after Macaulay Gillesphey swept home from the left to net a tidy equaliser.

Moments later, the Cherries went back ahead through Mikael Ndojli, who made it 2-1.

However, United did not throw the towel in and three minutes before the hour mark Luke Charman steered home a second equaliser.

With the conditions getting worse, extra time seemed on the cards.

Charman, though, had the final day with a winning header eight minutes from the end.
