Hoop, hoop hooray as squads into final
SCHOOLS BASKETBALL
THE penultimate Newcastle Eagles Community Foundation Hoops 4Health area tournament of the 2017/18 season took place across two days at the Lakeside Leisure Centre in Killingworth.
Forty-four teams from 15 primary schools across North Tyneside attended the tournament, hoping to secure a top-four finish and earn the chance to play in the Northumberland finals at Sport Central.
Day one produced close finishes in the final stages, Redesdale and Preston Grange taking the top two spots and returning to the finals for another year.
Redesdale also knocked out St Columba’s, the North Tyneside reigning champions, so a new winner will be crowned this year.
On day two, Stephenson Memorial sailed through after a six-point victory over their counterparts and Ivy Road narrowly scraped through by two points, putting out last year’s finalists King Edward.
With two returning finalists and two new entries the North Tyneside title is there for the taking.
The event was supported by North Tyneside Council, Northumbria Health Care Trust and the Hospital Volunteer Service.
In partnership, a new station for the roadshow was created which encouraged children to reflect on positivity and wellbeing.
Other stations included fitness, basketball and the importance of water.
Each of the councils within Tyne and Wear is also going through the same competition process, all the area winners coming together in May to battle it out to become Champion of Champions.
