SAINTS ARE TOP OF THE FORM TO STUMP RIVALS IN INDOOR CONTEST GIRLS CRICKET

-

ST WILFRID’S Roman Catholic College’s girls cricket team won the Lady Taverners’ Under13 Indoor Schools Competition in Durham – and will represent the county at the event’s regional finals next month.

The South Shields squad secured the county trophy by defending a score of 65 against Consett Academy in the final – their tenth consecutive win in the competition.

The Lady Taverners competitions are held annually and provide opportunities for girls to get into cricket.

In Durham, the competitions are organised and delivered by the Durham Cricket Board and 18 schools took part this year.

The deciding stages of the event were held at Durham CCC’s home, the Emirates Riverside at Chester-le-Street, where the semifinals and the final were contested.

St Wilfrid’s qualified for the deciding game after posting a decent total of 97 against Parkside Academy, who struggled to get over the line with 67.

In the other semi-final, Consett Academy against Sedgefield Community College, Consett came out on top with a score of 95 as Sedgefield fell 26 runs short.

In the final, St Wilfrid’s batted first and amassed a decent total of 65.

This was enough to win as Consett struggled to close the gap, finishing on 41.

As Durham’s Lady Taverners champions, St. Wilfrid’s will represent the Durham Cricket Board at the Regional Under-13 Finals at the Bolton Arena on April 17.

Marsha Davies, women and girls development officer at Durham Cricket Board, said: “I have been truly overwhelmed by the number of teams and girls who took part in the competition this year.

“All of them showcased a good standard of cricket, much improved from previous years.

“I think this goes to show the brilliant progress St Wilfrid’s’ captain receives the winners’ trophy from DCB women’s development officer Marsha Davies and (left) the victorious Saints team celebrates its success we have made in terms of the female game in our county.”
