Armstrong aims to bolster Spartans side in battle for play-offs

- By JEFF BOWRON

BLYTH Spartans hope to strengthen their squad for the run-in ahead of Thursday’s deadline to register new signings.

After that Blyth, sixth in Vanarama National League North, will have to go with what they’ve got.

Spartans’ game against Curzon Ashton at Croft Park on Saturday was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Alun Armstrong’s men will have been idle for a month when they, hopefully, return to action at rock-bottom North Ferriby on Saturday.

The Humbersiders are 21 points adrift and heading for a second consecutive relegation, but one of their two wins came at Blyth.

Ferriby lost 6-0 at Darlington on Saturday and Blyth boss Armstrong said: “We obviously owe North Ferriby one after what happened at our place.

“But after so many postponements, we’re just desperate to play again and get the points we need to be in the play-offs.

“I’ve got my eye on a couple of players at a Championship club and if I can get one, or both, it would set us up nicely.

“They are two good players, a striker and a right-back, who can also play in midfield, but it’s up to the club, the players and their agents.”

One of the players is believed to manager’s son Luke Armstrong, who joined Middlesbrough after scoring 23 goals for Blyth last season.

Robbie Tinkler, who spent the first half of the season on loan at Gateshead, is also believed to be on Armstrong senior’s radar.
