Crossing bid for road after death

BLACKSPOT GETS SAFETY UPGRADE

- By CHRIS KNIGHT Reporter

PLANS to introduce a crossing and reduce the speed limit at a South Shields accident blackspot have been unveiled following the death of a pensioner.

Pedestrian Martha Johnson, 88, died after being hit a car on Marsden Road on August 30 last year. A police investigation into the incident is continuing.

South Tyneside Council set up a temporary crossing with barriers and signals in November as the authority assessed measures to improve safety on road.

Now, the council has revealed plans to install a permanent puffin crossing next to the Spar shop and speed bumps along the road.

Marsden Road would also be reduced to a 20mph speed limit on this stretch and on adjoining roads to the north.

Vehicle-activated signs are set to be installed to alert drivers of the new lower limit.

Coun Neil Maxwell, Harton ward member on South Tyneside Council, said: “Road safety is of paramount importance to us.

“Following this tragic incident, a temporary crossing was quickly put in place to help allay concerns about this stretch of road. We are pleased that some potential long-term measures have been identified to help improve safety and reduce accidents.

“Having a signalised puffin crossing would provide a safer crossing point between the Aged Miners’ Cottages and the shop, while also supporting children and families on their school routes.”

The new proposals have been devised after the council carried out traffic and pedestrian surveys, as well as consulting with emergency services and transport operators.

Letters have been sent out to people living in the area and they have been encouraged to give their views on the suggested changes.

A consultation event is taking place tomorrow at Bulmer House on Marsden Road from 4-8pm.
