Tug-of-war teen Heaney set for exit

- By LEE RYDER

NEWCASTLE United midfielder Mackenzie Heaney is set to leave St James’ Park at the end of the season – despite being one of the club’s hottest prospects in the last few years.

The 19-year-old sparked an international tug-of-war three years ago as Scotland and England fought for his services.

Heaney was capped by Scotland at schoolboy level before representing England and winning eight caps for the Three Lions at under-18 level.

However, he has not been a regular in the club’s struggling under-23 team and has made just seven appearances in the second string.

The Walker lad, who is represented by the same Triple S management company as Wayne Rooney, is expected to move on from the Magpies when his contract is up.

He has already attracted interest from Norwich City and the attacking midfielder spent last week on trial with the Sky Bet Championship club, who are now deciding whether to make him an offer.

Heaney has interest from other clubs in the EFL too but despite a reserve team revamp at Newcastle for next season Heaney will not be part of it.

Newcastle released a host of under-23 players last week and will not get compensation for many of them if they sign for other clubs as they did not offer them improved deals.

Heaney recently played a part in Newcastle’s International Cup win over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.
