Pictures of old Newcastle in new book

-

STRIKING images of Newcastle - old and new have been published in a new book.

Rarely-seen photographs from the last century of old Eldon Square, the Empire Theatre, Jesmond Dene, the High Level Bridge, the Central Station, and St James’ Park - in 1927, the year Newcastle United last won the league title - are among 160 illustrations.

The older images come from the collection of Historic England.

Many of the modern images were captured by photographer and historian Paul Perry.

Paul is the leading authority on the history of his home town, Jarrow, and has around 20 North East photographic history books under his belt.

He said: “It was an enjoyable experience putting this book together, using a combination of the classic old photographs and my own, which I captured as I wandered around what is a fantastic city.”

The book is an illustrated history. It provides a nostalgic look at Newcastle’s past, and highlights the special character of some of its most important historic sites.

The older photographs are taken from the unique Historic England Archive, the nation’s record of 12 million photographs, drawings and publications, ranging from the 1850s and the earliest days of photography up to the present day.

The old and new images combine with text which outlines the story of Newcastle - one of England’s most historically significant cities, with a rich heritage dating back to Roman times.

Meanwhile, Paul has been busy and has at least two more books due for publication this year.

This new Newcastle book won’t be in the shops for a week or two.
