EC?????? Letters heady heady

I AM hoping that the Chronicle might be able to help spread the news about a call out for local residents to take part in workshops in an exciting project I’m running.

The project is called Fairground Reminiscence. It is a celebration of fairground heritage inspired by my own dad’s experience of growing up, living and working on fairgrounds.

Through an immersive performance installation, museum and gallery spaces will be transformed through a fairground set design, an obscure artist’s impression of a colourful exotic world. Audiences will be guided round the installation wearing personal Walkmans with a score of audio recordings, interviews of show people and a selection of fairground music

Community performers including children and skilled dancers will highlight the audience’s journey bringing the experience of the installation to life. Smells, tastes of candyfloss, toffee apples bring a sensestimulating journey of fairground nostalgia.

After being awarded a Space/ Time bursary from Space Six in partnership with the Empty Space I will begin in April and am offering the chance for local performers to take part.

The team is looking for two groups of participants - children aged 8 to 14, and performers of all ages aged 14 upwards (with an interest in drumming and percussion).

Free workshops will be held every Sunday in April at Space Six, Newcastle, NE1 6QE. Just register attendance by email in advance. Fairgrounds are iconic to many and still remain part of community culture.
