Thunder’s Scholarship lads go down a storm as they claim a victory over Rhinos

JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE

NEWCASTLE Thunder’s Scholarship Under-16s claimed a 32-20 victory over Leeds Rhinos.

Thunder opened the scoring with two quick tries within the first ten minutes.

Firstly through Isaac Notes, then through Rupert Civil making a big carry to extend Thunder’s lead to 8-0.

Leeds replied with two tries through good work from their stand-off - who managed to grab a try for himself as the Tykes went 12-8 ahead.

However, John Grey struck minutes from half-time in as he slammed the ball down - and he managed to dislocate his finger in the process.

A half full of action and entertainment ended all square at 12-12.

The second period started well for Thunder as they came out with great energy and put great attacking plays together which were testing the young Leeds defence.

Right centre Jack Allen found a gap and dotted over the try line.

Then captain Fergus Simpson made a big carry down the flank and smashed his way over the line - but Leeds never showed signs of giving up as they responded with a try.

After gaining momentum in attack, the ball was passed wide toThunder’s Isaac Notes who found himself with a a chance.

By throwing an outrageous dummy he opened up the space in front and charged through to the line from 10 metres out.

Again Leeds showed true resilience as they worked a good tip pass on the halfway, putting their player through to go in at the corner.

However, Mark Roberts was part of the last try of the match as he provided a bullet pass from a ruck, passing three defenders to put Jack Walker in to seal Thunder’s victory.

Thunder will look to continue their momentum when they visit Bradford Bulls on March 31.
