Bully for Bay as their girls win at double

-

WHITLEY Bay and Tynemouth senior ladies’ team claimed a win double over Sheffield Hallam (3-0) and Doncaster (2-1).

The game against Sheffield Hallam was going to be tough with the Steel City side involved in a relegation battle.

Whitley were dominant from the whistle and played great attacking play down the flanks.

Unable to deal with the momentum, Sheffield were soon 1-0 down following a deflection from Joss Plummer.

This was quickly followed by Plummer’s twin Alex securing a far-post deflection from a short corner.

Towards half-time Sheffield were becoming more confident with the ball.

However, this was knocked backed again by a ruthless finish from Jenny Bilton, who placed the ball carefully in the left corner.

The second period revealed a much more resilient Sheffield but, although chances were made, Whitley were unable to convert any of them.

Whitley then faced Doncaster, a team with very similar results and a squad still in contention for promotion.

Doncaster came out strongly and a physical battle developed on the pitch.

Whitley rode this pressure well and were clinical in the circle, winning a short corner which was converted well by Lottie Gill.

Doncaster reacted positively and a foot in the circle by Bay led to a penalty corner for the South Yorkshire side.

Clinical finishing on the far post put them back in the game at 1-1.

From a quick free hit from Whitley Bay, Alex Plummer fired the ball across the goal and it was deflected in by Jess Metcalfe.

The second half was fiercely contested with Doncaster counterattacking wide and forcing Bay’s goalkeeper Jo Spotswood to make several fantastic saves.

Much to Doncaster’s frustration they could not convert any of their chance as Bay triumphed to round off a great weekend.

The women’s second string lost 2-1 to Durham University. ■■BAY’S senior men’s team suffered mixed fortunes in the North Hockey League.

They went down 4-1 to Chester but then bounced back to see off Bowden 7-0.
