Discover Sting’s Quayside surprise

- By BARBARA HODGSON Reporter barbara.hodgson@trinitymirror.com

STING’S musical The Last Ship is to have a one-off outdoor performance on Newcastle Quayside this May.

The mammoth event will see the entire cast of the show take to a specially-built stage at Spillers Wharf joined by the superstar musician himself.

And it’s set to attract crowds of thousands.

The surprise news, announced on Thursday evening, is set to generate huge excitement and spark demand for the 15,000 tickets which will go on sale on Tuesday.

The Last Ship is currently gathering rave reviews at Northern Stage where its current - sell-out - premiere run is due to end on April 7 ahead of a UK tour.

But now an available slot in the tour will bring it back north to Newcastle on May 28 in between date commitments in Cardiff and Dublin.

The Quayside location will be a fitting one for the shipyard musical which was inspired by Sting’s memories of growing up in Wallsend and also his album The Soul Cages,

Brought alive by Sting music and lyrics and co-starring Joe McGann and local actress Charlie Hardwick, it tells of the fall-out of a shipyard’s closure and on a proud community who are determined to complete building on the last ship on the order books.

And the love story running through its heart features Sting sound-alike Richard Fleeshman and Frances McNamee.

Translating the powerful story and the large-scale industrial-looking set which recreates the shipyard world - to the banks of the Tyne is an ambitious undertaking and the event is expected to be one of the standout events of the summer.

A spokesman said that the full cast will perform and Sting is also expected to attend.

Tickets for the Spillers Wharf performance will go on sale on Tuesday, April 3 at 10am. To book tickets visit https://bit.ly/2J4a1YT
