Lady Mags can Tyke nothing from Leeds trip

FA WOMEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE NORTHERN DIVISION ONE

-

NEWCASTLE United stayed in relegation trouble, coming away emptyhanded after losing 1-0 at Leeds United.

In a match of few clear-cut chances at either end, Leeds took the points thanks to a Carey Huegett goal on 18 minutes.

Grace Donnelly saved a free-kick after three minutes and Jess Foster was close to giving Newcastle the lead, her shot narrowly clearing the crossbar before the hosts struck.

A precise Bridie Hannon corner found Huegett, who headed past Donnelly who later denied Huegett a second with a good save - Rebecca Hunt putting the rebound wide.

Steph Ord tried her luck from 25 yards but her shot went wide of the post.

Donnelly produced another save early in the second period before the visitors had another chance.

Ord’s shot-cum-cross flew across goal but no team-mates were able to apply the vital touch.

Ord tried again from distance as Newcastle pushed for an equaliser while Beth Davies and Holly Findlay both went close to adding a second.

Newcastle dropped two places to fourth bottom, four points off the relegation zone.

Chester-le-Street Town suffered a sixth successive defeat, this time losing 4-2 at 2016 North East Regional League champions Brighouse Town.

The title challengers rarely threatened but broke the deadlock four minutes before the break when Aimi Beresford was brought down inside the box.

Beresford stepped up for the resulting penalty and planted the ball wide of the goalkeeper to give the hosts a half- time lead.

Two minutes into the second period, Nichole Havery levelled.

Ten minutes later the hosts retook the lead when winger Charlotte Proud headed home a Lauren Doyle cross.

The hosts were again shocked when Maddy Atkinson netted from close range to make it 2-2.

With 20 minutes to go, Proud put Brighouse 3-2 up and they then added the decisive fourth to secure the points.
