Pupils prove Game for sporting action

MORE than 900 pupils from schools across County Durham gathered for the County Durham Level Three Winter School Games competitio­n.

The competitio­n, attended by more than 40 schools, was opened by Olympic swimmer Chris Cook and gymnast Paula Thomas, who also presented the winners’ trophies.

The event, which takes place biannually, featured eight sports boccia, gymnastics, athletics, swimming table tennis, dodgeball, tag rugby and netball.

It was played at four venues across the county incuding Stanley’s North Durham Academy and Louisa Centre.

The event also featured for the first time a standalone basketball competitio­n which involved a masterclas­s from internatio­nal coach Bob Martin. Twenty young leaders supported the event, volunteeri­ng after undergoing training through County Durham Sport’s Leadership and Volunteeri­ng scheme.

Event organiser Neville Duncan said: “The competitio­n produced a very high standard of action with many of the performanc­es showing the depth of talent present in County Durham.

“We would like to thank all the teachers, schools and organisers who helped to get all the young people to the Games. We would also like to thank all the venues invovled.

“We are already looking forward to welcoming everybody to the 2018 Summer Games which will be staged at Barnard Castle School on Frdiay, July 6.”
