Delivering the punch line

SIMON DUKE SPEAKS TO AIDAN MARTIN, WHO IS SET TO RELEASE HIS SELF-PENNED SINGLE

-

IT was the track that struck a chord with The X Factor judges and millions of people across the globe last summer and Aidan Martin will release his very personal track Punchline as a single today.

Cleadon singer Aidan sent goosebumps through the nation when he performed the self-penned song in his audition for the hit ITV talent show and it’s gone on to amass millions of views online.

Now the 27-year-old is hoping that a beefed-up version of Punchline will hit the right note with music fans when he launches it on digital platforms for people to download and stream.

It’s a song that Aidan has had in his locker for a number of years, but while he’s been working hard on new material, he feels it’s the perfect choice for his debut release.

“I actually wrote it two years ago,” he explained to The Chronicle.

“As a singer you inevitably get sick of some of your own songs but I’ve got a new love for Punchline now; it’s sounding exactly how I imagined it would. It definitely packs more of a punch – it’s got strings and drums and a music video – I just hope people who loved my audition love this re-working too.

“I’m still getting messages about the song now; it’s really overwhelming just how many people related to it. To hear that it’s changed peoples lives it’s absolutely amazing.”

And what about the person who inspired the song by breaking Aidan’s heart?

“I will never give them the satisfaction of naming them,” he said with real conviction.

“I now have all these people who have heard the song that hate them, what better way to stick two fingers up?”

While The X Factor has proved to be a life changing experience for acts like One Direction and Little Mix, it’s not worked out too well for others and while Aidan was devastated to be sent home at judges’ houses last year, he’s now happy to be taking control of his own career.

“I’m not going to lie, I was absolutely gutted to be told no right before the live shows. I’ve been through a lot in my 27 years but that was probably the hardest thing.

“It took a lot to pick myself up again but now I see it as a blessing in disguise as I have such a terrific team around me. I’ve got my own headline show and, while I’m based in London now, I’d love to do more stuff back home.

“The X Factor gave me an amazing platform to showcase my original songs and now I just want to get them out there.”

■ Punchline will be available on iTunes, Apple Music, Spotify and Amazon Music.
