Surely Jamaal’s nose is in front over Maguire for a plane ticket

-

“Those on standby have a chance but they come into the camp knowing that’s their role.”

Newcastle fans continually backed Lascelles’ bid for an England cap during the win against Leicester but has Southgate really got his number?

If he has, he may want to consider getting in touch because Lascelles excelled in the game on an off-day for Maguire.

The former Hull City and Sheffield United man did win four aerial battles compared to Lascelles’ three, but the Toon skipper came out well on top in terms of clearances with 11 compared to Maguire’s mere two.

Lascelles may have had fewer touches overall, with 28 compared to Maguire’s impressive 82, but the United star marshalled a defence up against both Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy to good effect for the majority of the game. Newcastle looked organised and compact and restricted Leicester to just ONE shot on target in the 90 minutes.

Despite scoring a late consolation, Vardy managed just 25 touches while he struggled to cope with Ayoze Perez getting in between the Foxes midfield and the back four, with the Spaniard enjoying 52 touches and grabbing an assist and a goal.

Maguire already has his foot in the door with England with four caps since 2017, but Lascelles can be considered hard done by to be ignored completely.

Southgate picked Maguire, Alfie Mawson, John Stones and James Tarkowski for recent games against Italy and Holland and unfortunately Lascelles is probably banking on injury withdrawals to find a place in the squad this summer despite a fine season as captain for Newcastle.
