Homecoming from Hell for sad Spartans

- By JEFF BOWRON

IT proved to be a frustrating homecoming for Blyth Spartans as their fading play-off hopes were dealt another blow on Saturday.

Kidderminster Harriers cemented their own place in the top six with a 2-1 win in Blyth’s first game at Croft Park for seven weeks.

Harriers captain Ryan Croasdale and lively substitute Emmanuel Sonupe scored twice in eight second-half minutes.

Croasdale found the bottom corner from 20 yards with an angled drive, a defensive howler then proving costly.

Nathan Buddle mis-controlled just inside the home half allowing Sonupe to race clear down the right.

The former Northampton Town winger’s cross-shot from out wide looped over Spartans keeper Peter Jameson and into the far corner.

Sean Reid pulled a goal back late on from six yards after Damon Mullen had flicked on an Adam Wrightson corner.

But it was too little, too late for a faltering Blyth who have now lost eight of their last 11 National League North games.

Manager Alun Armstrong said: “We played some lovely football at times on a difficult pitch, the groundsman working wonders to get the game on.

“We were a bit nervous for 20 minutes and weren’t playing the football we’re capable of against another good footballing side.

“We nullified their threat for the most part and had the better chances, but you’ve got to take your chances or you get kicked in the teeth.”

Blyth have slipped to ninth in the table, five points outside the playoffs ahead of tomorrow’s home game against Southport.
