NEW WONKY WAYS HELP REDUCE FOOD WASTE

-

From guacamole to a trendy spread on toast, the avocado has become one of our favourite fruits. But while we love it, there’s no denying it can be expensive, and with a national shortage prices have been rising even further.

However, the introduction of misshapen or wonky fruit and veg has helped curb the price increase and you can now pick them up for a fraction of the cost, as long as they don’t look absolutely perfect.

In Morrisons one wonky avocado is 39p compared to the UK average price of £1.05. There are great savings to be made for savvy shoppers who opt for wonky fruit and veg to fulfil their five-a-day.

In fact it’s now easier to find this odd looking produce that importantly doesn’t compromise on taste. And even better, typically, these ranges offer substantial savings compared to perfect looking produce.

For example a wonky vegetables selection box will set you back just £3, but has enough veg to feed a family for five days. Morrisons have been leading the way increasing their wonky options every year since 2015 and now offer 30 options after starting off with carrots, onions, parsnips and potatoes. This year they are adding pears, rhubarb, asparagus, grapes, kiwis, mangos among others - all sourced from farmers who would otherwise have to throw their imperfect produce away. As well as helping your pocket, shopping wonky is also a great way to help farmers by allowing them to increase crop yield and boost their incomes. The figures are staggering. Sustainability agency Wrap have estimated 90,000 tonnes of produce in the UK is sent to landfill every year. And according to the Soil Association, 20-40% of produce is rejected on the grounds of looks alone. So you can save money while helping to keep otherwise good produce out of the bin.
