Best Foot forward as Glenn targets revenge

‘THE HAMMER’ PRIMED FOR BRITISH TITLE REMATCH

GLENN FOOT is convinced he can gain revenge to win the British super lightweight crown and put it alongside his Commonwealth strap in his grandad’s living room!

Foot lost, some would say unjustly, to local rival Josh Leather at the Newcastle Arena in November.

But the man they call ‘The Hammer’ quickly dismissed any thoughts of throwing in the towel on what has been an eventful career to travel north of the Border to claim the Commonwealth title with an 11thround stoppage of Jason Easton.

Now with June 16 fast approaching and Eddie Hearn heading back to the Arena for another Matchroom show, the British Boxing Board of Control have ordered a rematch between Foot and Leather for the British bragging rights with the bout open to purse offers.

It’s expected to be an epic contest but Foot is adamant there will be only one winner: “I will beat Josh and that British belt is going in my grandfather’s living room.

“I was disappointed to lose to him last year but I’ve come back a lot stronger, and with Jack Catterall relinquishing the British for what I assume is bigger offers, then I hope I face Josh back in Newcastle on June 16 because I want my revenge.”

In a mixed career of both success and injury, the former Prizefighter champion took Easton apart in Glasgow last month to wash away any lingering doubts.

“It’s took a while to get back to what would be close to my best following injury,” admitted Foot. “Whoever I face next, it’ll be 110% Glenn Foot that goes in there.

“I’m fighting on the Hearn bill anyway and then it’s on to bigger and better things. We know there are other fights for me as well.

“I only had seven weeks’ notice heading to Glasgow, but it does make things easier, better, when it’s for a title. That was a good workout fight for me, but I’ve got longer to prepare this time and I can’t wait.”

Foot was talking at the opening of the new TKO boxing gym in Kenton when head coach Keith Macdonald brought together several stars past and present for a work-out with a difference.

Foot traded leather with former WBC International and British featherweight champion John Davison for fun, while Northern Area champion Darren Richardson Surtees and former British, Commonwealth and European featherweight champion Billy Hardy were also in attendance.

Hardy, along with Macdonald, made a presentation to his mentors Gordon and Lesley Ibinson for a lifelong service to the game.
